The street was developed in the 17th century, and is named after Prince George of Denmark. Denmark Street became associated with British popular music in the 1950’s due to the recording studios and music shops that popped up on the street. By the 1950’s, Denmark Street was known as “Tin Pan Alley” because of its association with music businesses. The music publishing trade started to decline in the 1960’s as groups such as the Rolling Stones started to get popular. In 1970’s Bernie Taupin and Elton John wrote Elton John’s first hit single, “Your Song” on Denmark Street. Many famous artists and musicians wrote songs and bought guitars on the famous Denmark Street and the rest is history!
